What
is 14 Days In December? - The campaign
is a peaceful living initiative, alternative to an anti-violence
campaign. It was started by the Tri-Community Interagency Council
(TRIAC) and is now sponsored by the Capital District Health Authority.
Almost 13 years ago the 14 Days in December peace initiative project
began. Over the years it has spread to many communities beyond the
original areas involved. The initiative was designed to effect changes
of attitude and to promote discussion and awareness of all forms
of violence in the daily lives of individuals, families and social
structures. It is as well intended to educate individuals, families,
community groups, school systems, businesses and the health care
sector on the importance of an individual and collective effort
to promote peace and non-violent living. And lastly, it is to promote
alternatives to learned behavior and to involve the people of the
community, hopefully leaving them with a renewed sense of empowerment
and better tools to continue on the path of change.

Days In December Mission Statement - Our belief and
our motto is "Gentle Ways are Best." The plan is to help each of
us to treasure the simple things of life, to find a way of getting
through the things that hold us down and to handle them in gentle
ways. This simple concept is meant to be within everyone's reach,
to be able to be applied to every day events and easy for all to
participate in.
“It is not a campaign that runs for two weeks and you forget
about it. We want people to make peaceful living a lifestyle 365
days a year.”
- Cathy Leslie, Community Health Board, Musquodoboit
Why "Gentle Ways"? - People who have studied violent behaviors
tell us that violence is calmed. We believe that if we work together,
we can decrease violent behaviors and increase peace in our communities!
"Peace is people talking together with a heart between them."
- quoted from Child, Age 8 |
